The new house stands on a corner of a Victorian terrace in east London, once a bomb site, now part of the Carlton Square conservation area. It is a Low Energy Transformation Initiative (LETI) Pioneer Project with Passivhaus certification for the design stage. A collaboration with architect Claire Moody, the building is constructed with timber, reclaimed brick and low carbon concrete and designed to operate with minimal energy use with thick woodfibre insulation, mechanical ventilation heat recovery (MVHR), an internal heat pump, solar panels and triple glazed windows.
The internal accommodation is diverse but compact with the narrow site measuring only 3.5m across. Each space has at least two aspects and a high ceiling zone for lots of fresh air and natural daylight. The small front and rear gardens are planted with new apple trees, Hornbeam and flowering climbers.
During the construction stage the scaffolding was wrapped in a bespoke art installation by Grace Sherrington.
